Summary Book XX

Book 20
Athena finds Odysseus still awake, but she allays his fears, and he falls asleep. In the morning of the thirty-ninth (or fortieth) day, Zeus thunders favorably and Odysseus, Telemachus, and Eumaeus are joined by the faithful herdsman, Philoetius. A wanton suitor, Ctesippus, abuses Odysseus and arouses Telemachus' wrath. But Agelaus, another suitor, restores calm. Athena provokes uncontrollable laughter among the suitors who mock the dire prediction of Theoclymenus.
